お話はなし

そらは くもで いっぱいですが、ゲンは「雨あめは ふらない！」と じしん まんまんです。ゲンは「晴はれ男おとこ」、どこへ 行いっても 晴はれに なる 人ひとだからです。そこで しばまるが「あめ」（雨あめ）と 言いうと、ゲンには「あめ」（飴あめ）に 聞きこえます。

雨あめが ふって きて、三人さんにんは お店みせの のきしたで 雨宿あまやどりを します。リナが かいた そら、くも、あまつぶの スケッチが、漢字かんじの「雨あめ」に なります。あめかんむり、読よみ方かたの「あめ」と「ウ」、そして 音おとの 高たかさで 雨あめと 飴あめを 聞ききわける ことを 学まなびます。

  • しばまるおはよう、ゲン。今日きょうは雲くもが多おおいね。Morning, Gen. Lots of clouds today.
  • ゲンおはよう！ くもってるだけだ。雨あめはふらない！Morning! It's just cloudy. It won't rain!
  • しばまるかさ、持もってきた？Did you bring an umbrella?
  • ゲンいらない！ おれは晴はれ男おとこだからな！Don't need one! I'm a "hare-otoko" — the sun always follows me!
  • リナわたしも、かさ、わすれた……I forgot my umbrella, too...
  • しばまるじゃあ、早はやめに帰かえろう。Then let's head home early.

  • しばまるそれが「雨あめ」。空そらからふってくる、あめだよ。That's 雨, "ame" — the kind that falls from the sky.
  • ゲン……食たべられないほうの、あめか。...The kind you can't eat.
  • しばまるまず、上うえの横線よこせんは「空そら」。First, the line at the top is the sky.
  • しばまるその下したは、空そらをおおう「雲くも」。Under it, the clouds covering the sky.
  • しばまるそして、この4つの点てんは……？And these four dots are...?
  • ゲン雨あまつぶだ！ おれに当あたったやつ！Raindrops! Like the ones that hit me!
  • しばまるそう。空そらと、雲くもと、ふってくる雨あまつぶ。だから「雨あめ」なんだ。Right. The sky, the clouds, and falling raindrops. That's why this is "rain."
  • リナ雨 started as a picture: a line for the sky, clouds hanging below it, and raindrops falling. It's one of the kanji that came straight from a drawing.
  • しばまる雨あめが字じの上うえにのると、少すこし平ひらたくなるんだ。When 雨 sits on top of another kanji, it gets a little flatter.
  • リナThis shape is called "amekanmuri" — the rain radical. You'll find it in kanji about the weather: 雪, snow. 雲, cloud.
  • しばまる電車でんしゃの「電でん」にも、雨あめがあるよ。There's rain in 電, too — like in 電車, "train."
  • ゲン電車でんしゃにも雨あめが!?Rain in a train!?
  • リナ電 means electricity. Long ago, it meant lightning — the flash in the rain clouds. That's why it has rain on top.
  • ゲンよし、書かくぞ！ 雨あめは8画かくだ！Alright, let's write it! 雨 has 8 strokes!
  • ゲンまず、空そら！First, the sky!
  • ゲン雲くもの左ひだり！The left side of the cloud!
  • ゲン雲くもの右みぎ。かぎみたいに曲まげる！The right side — bend it like a hook!

  • しばまる点てんは、左ひだりの2つが先さき。それから右みぎの2つ。The dots: the two on the left first, then the two on the right.
  • リナTip: draw the middle line before the dots. Then do the left dots, top to bottom, and the right dots, top to bottom.
  • しばまるいっしょに書かこう。いち、に、さん、し、ご、ろく、なな、はち！Let's write it together. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight!
  • ゲンこれは、なんて読よむ？How do you read this?

  • しばまる「あめ」は訓読くんよみ。ほかの言葉ことばとくっつくと「あま」になることもあるよ。「ウ」は音読おんよみ。"Ame" is the kun-yomi. Joined with other words, it sometimes becomes "ama." "U" is the on-yomi.
  • リナOh, I get it! Ame is the Japanese word, and it can turn into ama inside other words. And u is the on-yomi, from old Chinese.
  • しばまるそれから、「雨あめ」と「あめ（キャンディ）」は、音おとの高たかさがちがうんだ。Also, "rain" and "candy" are said with a different pitch.

  • リナListen. Rain starts high and drops. Candy starts low and goes up. In Tokyo Japanese, pitch can change the meaning.
  • ゲンあめ……あめ……。おなじに聞きこえる……Ame... ame... They sound the same to me...
  • しばまるだいじょうぶ。聞きいていると、わかってくるよ。Don't worry. Keep listening, and you'll start to hear it.
  • しばまる雨あめの日ひは、家いえで本ほんを読よむのが好すき。On rainy days, I like reading books at home.

  • ゲン大雨おおあめだ！ 今日きょうは外そとに出でないぞ。It's pouring! I'm staying inside today.

  • しばまるさっき、お店みせの前まえで雨宿あまやどりしたね。Earlier, we waited out the rain in front of the shop.
  • リナAmayadori means waiting under a roof until the rain stops. Here, ame becomes ama.
  • しばまる雨天中止うてんちゅうしUTEN CHUUSHI — canceled if it rains
  • ゲン今夜こんやは花火はなびだ！ ……「雨天中止うてんちゅうし」？Fireworks tonight! ..."Uten chuushi"?
  • しばまる雨あめがふったら、なしってこと。It means it's canceled if it rains.
  • ゲンてるてる坊主ぼうずを作つくらなきゃ！I've gotta make a teru teru bozu!
  • リナHere's the on-yomi, u. 雨天 means rainy weather. You'll see 雨天中止 on posters for events in Japan. And a teru teru bozu is a little doll people hang up to wish for sunny weather.
  • しばまる梅雨つゆTSUYU — the rainy season
  • しばまる6月がつは梅雨つゆ。毎日まいにちのように雨あめがふるよ。June is "tsuyu," the rainy season. It rains almost every day.
  • ゲンつゆ!? そばのつゆか！ おなかすいた！Tsuyu!? Like the dipping sauce for soba? Now I'm hungry!
  • しばまるその「つゆ」じゃないよ……雨あめが多おおい季節きせつのこと。Not that "tsuyu"... It's the season with lots of rain.
  • ゲンまた、まちがえた……Wrong again...
  • リナ梅雨, tsuyu, is a special reading. You just learn it as a whole word.
  • しばまる雨あめの字じ、いろいろあったね。We found lots of words with 雨!
